Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans
The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his role in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.
The league’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
