Astronaut Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
